Accessing LARC (Long Acting Reversible Contraception) in Oldham
Due to a high demand for Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC – coils or implants), Oldham, Bury, and Rochdale Sexual Health Services are currently holding a waiting list. If you are interested in booking an appointment for a coil or an implant please contact the service, and you will be added to the waiting list. The current wait is approximately 11 weeks, however it does depend upon patient’s needs.
If you are waiting for an appointment for a coil, please read the following:
- If you have a Mirena (Hormonal coil) coil fitted, please be advised that this coil can now be used for up to 8 years after fitting (the previous license was 5 years). This means you can now safely rely on your Mirena for a further 3 years to the date that you were initially given.
- Benilexa and Levosert hormonal coils can also be used for 8 years for contraception.
- If you were aged 45 or older when your Mirena coil was fitted, it can be left in-situ for contraception until age 55. You then do not need to have another one fitted.
Please note: The 8 year guidance only applies for contraception purposes
- Cu IUD (Copper coil) if fitted at aged 40 and over, it can remain in-situ for contraception until after menopause. You do not need to have it replaced
- If your coil has or is about to expire, please contact us to make an appointment for an alternative method until your device can be fitted.
Condoms are available without an appointment at all of our clinics
A number of GP practices across Oldham, Bury and Rochdale also provide LARC. Click here for more information
GP's offering LARC
If you require long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) such as a coil (IUD/IUS) or an implant for contraceptive purposes, your local GP surgery may be able to offer this procedure from their own premises by a qualified nurse or GP. This means it may not always be necessary to come to one of our sexual health clinics if your registered GP, or a surgery more convenient to you, offers LARC services. This includes insertion, removal, or replacement services.
If you just require a coil removal (no coil replacement) the smear taker at your registered GP should be able to do this.
It is important to note that some surgeries may offer implants and coils, and some may offer just implants/ and or coils. It is always best to check the individual surgery website or telephone them to check. Waiting times can differ also, but some GP surgeries may be able to see you quicker than we can at our clinics.

If you’ve tested positive, your sexual partner(s) from the last six months need to know. PrEP does not protect against any other STI’s, only HIV. You will need to take other precautions in addition to PrEP to protect yourself from all other STI’s. We recommend that patients taking PrEP should have regular STI testing and a HIV test every 3 months.
PEPSE (anti-HIV medication)
PEPSE can stop HIV infection taking hold after the virus has entered the body. However, it is an emergency measure to be used as a last resort, for example if a condom breaks.
